QVC GETS ALLY IN TAKEOVER

In a move that could sharply boost QVC Network's embattled bid for Paramount Communications, BellSouth Corp. said Thursday it will invest $1.5 billion in the West Chester, Pa.-based home shopping network if it succeeds in buying Paramount.

Analysts said Thursday the alliance could be a prelude to a sweetened offer for Paramount by QVC, which is vying for control of the entertainment and publishing company with Viacom Inc. Viacom's latest offer expires Nov. 22.

In a related development that could quell the concerns of federal anti-trust regulators, Liberty Media Corp., the cable TV operator that holds 22 percent of QVC's stock, agreed to divest its ownership in QVC within 18 months if the shopping channel wins its bid. - Newsday
