CONSTRUCTION PROJECT ALERT

The Virginia Department of Transportation is alerting motorists to these highway construction projects in the New River Valley:

U.S. 11-460 bridge at the Montgomery County line: The bridge over the Roanoke River and Norfolk and Western Railroad is being repaired. Two-way traffic will use the westbound lane, while repairs are being made on the eastbound side.

The speed limit has been reduced to 45 mph, and vehicles wider than 9 feet are prohibited.

Construction work to replace the bridge's deck will continue into the spring.

In Christiansburg, work continues to widen the westbound lanes of U.S. 460 Business (North Franklin Street) from Cambria Street to the western crossover at Palmer Street. Also, the right-turn lane from westbound U.S. 460 Business onto the U.S. 460 Bypass is being extended.

This work will take about a month to complete.

Virginia 8 paving work in Montgomery County has been completed, but work remains on the Virginia 8 shoulders, from Virginia 670 to the Floyd County line.

This work should take another week to finish.

Along Interstate 81 in Pulaski County: The road surfaces on bridge approaches are being paved on both the northbound and southbound lanes, from the Montgomery County line to the Wythe County line.

Work is expected to continue through November.

When passing a highway work zone, drivers should use caution and slow down. Those caught speeding in a work zone face a fine of up to $250.

For more information on these and other Virginia Department of Transportation projects, call Laura Bullock, 387-5493.
