Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez, D-Texas, chairman of the House Banking Committee, has set a Monday deadline for the Federal Reserve Board to turn over copies of every tape and transcript of Federal Open Market Committee meetings and telephone conference calls since 1976.
``Please understand ... that your obligation under the law to comply with the committee's request is not discretionary,'' Gonzalez said.
Fed chairman Alan Greenspan revealed the existence of the tapes and transcripts at a hearing before Gonzalez's panel last month, causing a stir among academic economists.
Researchers could use them to understand the reasoning behind monetary policy and the degree to which political pressures played a role in decisions at the independent central bank.

Weight-loss drug recalled by FDA
WASHINGTON - ``Quickly,'' a weight-loss product, is being recalled because of potentially dangerous amounts of a prescription drug, the Food and Drug Administration said Friday.
The agency said people who have been taking ``Quickly'' should stop and should dispose of what is left or return it to the distributor.
FDA tests found that single doses of ``Quickly'' contained a full medical dose of furosemide, a potent diuretic that must be prescribed by a physician. Marketing and selling furosemide in a nonprescription drug or weight-loss\ product is a violation of federal law.
