PORNOGRAPHY, TOO, IS IN EYE OF BEHOLDER
With regard to the letter which appeared in the Oct. 31 issue of Current
criticizing Pat West's sculpture as pornography: Webster's Dictionary defines
pornography as pictures, films or writing which deliberately arouse sexual
excitement. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Likewise, it seems that the
verdict of pornography comes from the one who has beheld and been aroused. It
makes me sad that the sight of a naked body, real or representational, incites
some people to scream "pornography!" Is this what we think when we see our
babies for the first time, naked? Is the state of being naked a deliberate
attempt to arouse sexual excitement? I think not.\
