In Fayetteville, N.C., Washington and Lee's Josephine Schaeffer ran away with the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Region cross country women's championship. Schaeffer, who won in a personal-best time of 16 minutes and 46 seconds, beat her closest competitor, Debbie Finke of Centre College, by 1:35. Both Schaeffer and teammate Amy Mears, who finished fourth, will compete in next weekend's NCAA Division III Championships in Grinnell, Iowa.
In Blacksburg, sophomore Jim Jackson led all scorers with 30 points as the Virginia Tech men's basketball team played its annual Maroon-White game.
Redshirt freshman Delwyn Dillard scored 21 points, and hardship freshman Adrian "Ace" Custis, who missed all of last year with a knee injury, scored 18 points.
The Hokies play an exhibition game against the Finland National Team on Tuesday night at 7:30 in Cassell Coliseum.
