OBIT WOODY, ALLEN O. JR.

WOODY, Allen O. Jr., 72, of Rocky Mount, died Friday, November 12, 1993 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born June 5, 1921 in Rocky Mount, son of the late Allen O. Woody and Pearl B. Woody. He was a 1939 graduate of Rocky Mount High School and attended National Business College. He served in the Army in the European Theatre during World War II. Later, he served as Post Commander of the American Legion Post No. 6, during which time membership was at an alltime high and he was instrumental in raising funds for the construction of the American Legion Building on Tanyard Road. Beginning in the tobacco business at an early age, he became the yougest buyer in the business for Liggett Myers Tobacco Co. From 1959 to 1980, Woody and his brother, Buck operated the Woody Brothers Tobacco Warehouse in Martinsville, Va. He served as president of the Old Belt Tobacco Warehouse Association. He entered politics in 1966, winning a coucil seat, which he held for two terms. He was elected Mayor of Rocky Mount in 1970, a position which he held until his retirement in 1990. During his tenure, the town built a municipal building, a new water plant, developed an industrial park with Franklin County and recruited several large industries, all while building up an eight million dollar budget surplus. He served on the board of the First Virginia Bank of Franklin County and at the time of his death, was serving on the board of the First National Bank of Rocky Mount. He also served for many years on the board of Franklin Memorial Hospital, where he was involved in numerous fund raising projects. He was an active solicitor and generous contributor to numerous civic, charitable and religious organizations in Rocky Mount and Franklin County. He was a lifelong member of the Rocky Mount Christian Church. Most people in the Rocky Mount area remember Allen as a special friend who was always there in time of need or crisis. He loved people and spent his entire life in unselfish service. He will be remembered for the two principles which guided his life: " A fool and his money are soon parted" and "Never forget a friend or an enemy." Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Louise Foster Woody; one daughter, Rebecca Louise Woody of Charlottesville, Va.; two sons, Allen O. Woody III, and Dudley F. Woody, both of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Jennifer Ellen Woody, Lauren Carter Woody, Nancy Louise Woody, and Michelle Elizabeth Woody; two brothers and three sisters, Oliver S. Woody Sr. of Roanoke, Andrew "Buck" Woody of Rocky Mount, Helen Woody Lipes of New Castle, Jo Woody Shaw of High Point, N.C., Cora Woody Harvey of Lynchburg; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday from Lynch Chapel, with Rev. Roland Jones and Rev. William Dawson officiating. Interment will be in Franklin Memorial Park. Friends may call at Lynch Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Sunday, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Franklin Memorial Hospital or a church of one's choice.
