Anderson, a hard-throwing left-hander who is one of Timesland's best baseball prospects, signed a letter-of-intent to play for Radford last week. Anderson, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior whose fastball has been clocked in the mid 80-mph range, picked Radford over Virginia Tech and James Madison.
In two years, Anderson has a record of 19-2 with 301 strikeouts and an earned run average under 1.00. He also plays first base for Glenvar and batted .478 last year.
"Out of all the schools I visited, Radford was the one that said it would give me a chance to play [the field] and pitch," Anderson said. "I don't think I could stand sitting every day and just pitching once a week."
In 1993, Anderson was 10-2 with 153 strikeouts in 85 innings for Glenvar, which went 16-5-1 and reached the Group A state championship game. He was named Timesland's top sophomore baseball player in 1992 after going 9-0 with 148 strikeouts and an 0.54 ERA.
Roanoke's Chip Sullivan shot an opening-round 69 and is tied for second at the first regular-division event of the Avon Grips PGA Tournament Series.
Sullivan, a teaching professional at Hanging Rock Golf Club, trails David Prange of Glenview, Ill., who opened with a 67 on the par-72 Cobblestone Country Club in Palm City, Fla.
Also competing in the two-round event, which has a total purse of $30,200 and a first-place prize of $3,300, is Martinsville's Stan Jones, who had a 79.
The Virginia Tech men's basketball team plays the Finland National team in an exhibition at Cassell Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. today, the Hokies' first outside competition of the season.
General admission tickets are $5. It's the first of two exhibition games for Tech, which plays Court Authority at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Cassell. The Hokies open Nov. 27 against West Virginia in Landover, Md.
