TRESPASSING AMPUTEE IS FREE ON LOWER BOND

A man sentenced to two years in jail for trespassing in front of a Roanoke restaurant is free on bond pending an appeal.

Mark Dunford, 61, was released from the Roanoke City Jail over the weekend after a judge reduced his bond last week.

Dunford, whom prosecutors have called a "pest to the downtown area," has a long record of arrests for public drunkenness, trespassing and panhandling.

After hearing testimony that Dunford - who has no legs - had parked his wheelchair in front of Macado's on Church Avenue and was asking patrons for money, General District Judge Richard Pattisall said he had lost patience.

Pattisall last month imposed the maximum sentence of 12 months in jail for each of two trespassing charges.

But at a hearing last week in Roanoke Circuit Court, Judge Roy Willett reduced Dunford's bond from $5,000 to $1,000.
