MONTGOMERY SITE FOR STUDY ON AGING

PEOPLE OVER 80 make up one of the fastest growing segments of the U.S. population, but little is known about the health and financial well-being of these seniors. The University of Michigan, in conjunction with the National Institutes on Aging, is conducting a survey of people as they move into very old age.

Montgomery County is one of two places in Virginia to be included in the project titled "Aging and Health in America". Letters will be sent to random households requesting information prior to an hour long interview. The interviewing teams will be working through April 1994 gathering data.

\ Local residents can enroll as commuter participants in the spring ELDERHOSTEL PROGRAMS in Radford. The non-profit educational organization offers classes at educational institutions across the country.

Three one-week courses are being offered February 27 through April 1 through Radford University. The sessions will take place at the Best Western Radford Inn, and local seniors may enroll in all three for $135; any two for $75; and just one for $40. The full session with meals and lodging costs $320.

The first class is on fairy tales, the joy of singing and censorship in our schools. The second week explores Appalachian caves with a biological discussion of who we are and where we come from and the impact television has had on our lives. The third class views a decade of classic western film, studies the mind of the serial killer and gives tips on how to improve family communication.
