SURVEY: TEENS HAVE POOR READING HABITS

Teen-agers would rather spend time with each other than read, and 17-year-olds are only half as likely to read books as 9-year-olds, according to a survey on reading habits.

The survey for the American Federation of Teachers and the Chrysler Corp. found that 86 percent of 9-year-olds read a book at least a few times a week. That dropped to 42 percent by age 17.

Within these findings is a message for parents, the sponsors said.

"If students are to develop good reading habits, they have to have good role models," Jamie Horwitz, the AFT's assistant director of public affairs, said Tuesday. - Associated Press
