Tech shot 56.6 percent from the floor against the tall but slow Finns, and outrebounded Finland 57-31. Shooting and rebounding were Tech's sore spots during last year's 10-18 season.
"I was pleased with our defensive effort in the second half particularly," Tech coach Bill Foster said. "We did a little better job [rebounding]. Our offensive patience needs a lot of work."
Freshman forward Custis played his first game after injuring a knee last preseason and had 12 points and 12 rebounds, seven offensive. Carruth had eight points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots, and Jim Jackson added 12 points.
Tech faces Court Authority in its final exhibition game 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Cassell Coliseum. In other college sports:
In Lexington, freshman guard Warren Johnson scored 23 points and senior Jonathan Goodman grabbed 15 rebounds as VMI overwhelmed the Fortean Explorers AAU team in an exhibition basketball game.
In Charlottesville, Jeffra Gausepohl scored 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Virginia to a 73-64 victory over Soproni Vasutas in a women's basketball exhibition game. Freshman Konecka Drakeford added 16 points for the Cavaliers.
Bridgewater tailback Ronnie Howard, who rushed for 1,610 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, has been chosen the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's football player of the year in a vote by the league's coaches.
Howard, a senior from Hopewell, heads the All-ODAC team, while Joe Riccio, who guided Randolph-Macon a 7-2-1 record and the ODAC championship, is the coach of the year.
Two Washington and Lee players made the first team - offensive lineman John Surface of Jacksonville, Fla., and defensive lineman Robert Hull, of Lexington.
Salem's Chad Wheeling of Hampden-Sydney made the first unit on the defensive line while Blacksburg's Max Appleby, of Guilford College, is a first-team linebacker. Mark Middleton of E&H and Pearisburg is the first-team punter.
