EDDY SETS HIS SIGHTS ON FOE'S SUPPORTER

Roanoke County Supervisor Lee Eddy served notice Tuesday that he will be looking to replace Geoffrey Ottaway on a Virginia Western Community College advisory board when Ottaway's term expires.

Ottaway contributed $1,000 Eddy to Eddy's opponent in this month's election.

"I do not plan to vote for his reappointment," Eddy announced at a meeting of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors.

One Democratic supervisor accused Eddy of trying to interject partisan politics into the board's appointment system.

Hollins District Supervisor Bob Johnson said appointees should be judged on their willingness and ability to serve the county, not on a partisan "litmus test."

Eddy said it was inappropriate for Ottaway to have given Democrat Lee Garrett such a large campaign contribution less than two weeks after Ottaway was appointed to the community college board.

"It shows a substantial lack of confidence in the board that appointed him," Eddy said.

Eddy, who handily won re-election Nov. 2, also was upset that Garrett campaign posters were put up within a highway right-of-way, in violation of a state law.

Eddy suggested the county revise its sign ordinance to make it easier to convict violators.

"It's been two weeks, and Mr. Garrett's smiling face is still gracing the stop signs in the Windsor Hills District," Eddy said.

Vinton District Supervisor Harry Nickens, a Democrat, suggested that Eddy should put the election behind him.

"You're a bigger person than to continue to beat on someone you beat at the polls," Nickens said.
