But it was the newcomers from Shawsville High and not the experienced group from Northwood who kept a cool head in the opening round of the Region C girls' tournament Tuesday at Fort Chiswell High.
Shawsville, a year removed from its last regional appearance, erased a five-point third-quarter deficit and went on to beat Northwood 55-49 to advance to tonight's semifinals.
Shawsville (16-8), which had made the field because it was the Mountain Empire District runner-up, will play Pioneer District champion Glenvar (19-4) in the second game of tonight's double-header.
"I'm proud of these girls because only two of them, Kelly Ryan and Amy Roberts, have ever played in the regionals before," Shawnees coach Tracy Poff said.
Northwood seemed to become more tense as the game wore on. Shawsville just built on a lead that reached 11 points. Northwood (15-9) closed to the final margin with 26 seconds to play, then allowed the Shawnees to hold on to the finish.
Northwood also did itself damage by missing 17 of 26 free throws.
Shawsville achieved its victory collectively. Seven girls scored, four of them in double figures.
Ryan scored 13, Roberts and Vanessa Wilson chipped in 10 each, and Robin Burdette added 11.
"Thats's nothing new for us," Poff said. "Different girls have led us in scoring all year long."
