UVA SOCCER PLAYER HONORED

University of Virginia midfielder Claudio Reyna was named Player of the Year and James Madison's Dr. Tom Martin was selected Coach of the Year on the 1993 Virginia Men's Soccer All-State team announced Wednesday by the Virginia Sports Information Directors association.

Martin was a near unanimous pick for coaching honors after leading the Dukes to a 19-2-1 record.

The entire first team:

Goalkeeper - Brian Bailey (James Madison). Defenders - Bob Johnston (James Madison); Joe Lenard (Old Dominion); Brandon Pollard (Virginia). Midfielders - Kaarlo Kankunnen (James Madison); Claudio Reyna (Virginia); Anthony Sherwood (Virginia Commonwealth); Damian Silvera (Virginia). Forwards - Brent Bennett (James Madison); Leigh Cowlishaw (Richmond); Tamir Linhart (George Mason).

In other college sports:

University of Virginia men's tennis coach John Dokken has resigned effective Nov. 30 to accept a position managing a tennis club in Weston, Mass. His squad finished 11-13 during the 1992-93 season.

Don Burgess scored 32 points and Tyrone Travis added 18 and grabbed nine rebounds as Radford pounded Finland 89-69 in a college basketball exhibition game in Radford. Burgess sank 11 of 13 field goals and hit 9-for-9 at the free-throw line.

Fifth-seeded Virginia Tech (17-17) will face No. 4 UNC Charlotte in Friday's first round of the Metro Conference volleyball tournament in Louisville, Ky.
