MCDOWELL KO'D IN BAR FIGHT

Cy Young winner Jack McDowell of the Chicago White Sox was knocked unconscious during a fight in New Orleans' French Quarter early Thursday but was not charged.

Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder, 28, was involved in the incident and booked for public drunkenness and disturbing the peace, Sgt. Elizabeth Wigginton said.

Wigginton said the fight reportedly started about 4:15 a.m. when Vedder spit in the face of another man.

McDowell, a rock musician in his spare time, was knocked out during the incident and was treated for a cut lip and scalp lacerations inflicted by a bouncer. The pitcher was treated and released from the Medical Center of Louisiana, Wigginton said.

The Baltimore Orioles selected six coaches Thursday, completing their coaching assignments for the 1994 season.

Manager John Oates picked Don Buford as bench coach to replace Jerry Narron, who becomes third-base coach.

Buford was bench coach in 1988 and director of field operations between 1989 and 1991. Buford managed in the Orioles farm system for the last two years.

Davey Lopes will return as first-base coach. Pitching coach Dick Bosman, hitting coach Greg Biagini and bullpen coach Elrod Hendricks also are returning.
