THE TIPOFF

WISH IT WOULD RAIN: Christo, the internationally acclaimed artist whose monumental works take almost as much effort as his getting to speak at Radford University, will try again tonight at 8 in Preston Auditorium on the Radford campus. He has tried twice before, but weather problems have prevented it.

His topic will be ``The Umbrellas: Japan-USA, 1984-91,'' and ``Wrapped Reichstag, Project for Berlin.''

Christo's vision cannot be described in this small space, but if the words ``Running Fence'' mean anything to you, you will see the appeal in listening to him speak. And if they don't, well, you ought to go, if only to be amazed.

Admission is free.

WHAT A NIGHT: ``Grease,'' the fab musical that lives on, will be presented tonight at 8 at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium. Show time is 8 o'clock. Tickets are $24.50 and $21.50. Call the box office at 981-1201 or Ticketmaster at 343-8100.

OPENERS: The Galax Mountain Music Jamboree takes place in a special venue Saturday night. It will make its debut in the old Rex Theater in Galax, which is being renovated. Guitarist Wayne Henderson, pianist Gary Patton, the Ballard's Branch Bog Trotters and cloggers will be featured at the 7 o'clock show. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students. Proceeds go toward the theater work. This is sponsored by the Galax Downtown Association, whose number is 236-0668.

HARMONIOUS: The Roanoke Chamber Singers will present a fall concert Saturday night at 7:30 at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church in Roanoke. The fare will include Broadway medleys, spirituals and sacred music. The group of 16 is led by Frank Morris. Admission is free.

HIT IT: The Radford University Steel Drum Band will make its debut Monday night at 8 during the annual performance by the school's percussion and marimba ensemble. Al Wojtera directs the show in Preston Auditorium. Tickets are $3 for adults and $1 for children.

GENRE-WEAVER: Clarence ``Gatemouth'' Brown mixes jazz, blues, bluegrass, zydeco, Cajun and calypso elements into his music, and he plays a mixture of instruments, including guitar, violin, harmonica, piano, mandolin, viola and drums. He'll show his stuff tonight at 9 at the Ellington Fellowship Playhouse in Lynchburg. Tickets are $15 and the number is (804) 845-2162.

CRAFTING: The Top of the Mountain Arts and Crafts Festival will be Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Mountain Lake in Giles County. Basketry, hanging art, stained glass, jewelry, tinnery, pottery, wood carvings and wildlife paintings are some of the items to be sold. Bluegrass music also will be performed.

The Gallery is the place, and its telephone number is 626-7121, ext. 445. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The Wytheville Woman's Club will present an Arts and Crafts Mart on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Wytheville Community Center. Admission and parking are free.

Y0: Front Range and the Lost and Found will perform in concert Saturday night at 8 in the Little Theater at Hollins College. They are bluegrass musicians. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Call 563-5937.

YO, YO: Robert and Victoria Wyatt will play in Talmadge Hall at Hollins College tonight at 8:15. They are a husband-and-wife team of four-hand piano specialists who have gained critical acclaim since their debut in 1989. The Hollins program will include Bach's Sonata in F Major and Gershwin's ``Rhapsody in Blue.''

The concert is free. It's sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Music Teachers' Association.

RITES OF PASSAGE: Neil Simon's ``Biloxi Blues'' continues at the Sale Theatre of Ferrum College tonight through Sunday. Shows are at 8 tonight and Saturday night and 2 Sunday afternoon. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students. Call 365-4335.

GATHER 'ROUND: The Reading Room, a series of roundtable readings of new plays by emerging and established writers, reconvenes Monday night at 7:30 in Olin Gallery at Roanoke College. Charles Boller's new play, ``Amistad,'' will be featured. Ten area actors in street clothes will read from the script. The play is based on a historical event in Connecticut that was the first public clash over slavery in America.

The reading and the reception that follows it are free. Call 375-2282 for more information.
