BRIEFLY PUT . . .

REP. RICK Boucher voted against the North American Free Trade Agreement this week after surveying local businesses and deciding the pact "is not in the 9th District's best economic interests."

Leaving aside the fact that it is in the nature of free trade to produce winners and losers, one has to hope Boucher would not vote to go to war on similar grounds - such as the best economic interests of the Radford Arsenal.

A FEDERAL jury in Chicago may put at risk the feelin'-so-low-'cause-love's- gone-wrong love-song industry. Think about it:

Could Johnny Ray have made it crooning, "if your sweetheart sends a letter of adieu, it's no secret you'll feel better if you sue"? Would Elvis's career have taken off with "if your baby leaves you and you need a place to grouse, it's right at the end of Lonely Street at Heartbreak Courthouse"?

But grant this to Chicago attorney Sharon Wildey, who successfully sued her fiance for $178,000 because he ended their seven-week engagement. When it comes to taking revenge, Wildey makes a better role model for wronged women than Lorena Bobbitt.
