"I did not meet all of my academic commitments this fall and I'm sorry for the impact that's had on my family, my teammates, my coaches and myself," Dixon said in a statement prepared by the school.
Dixon, a first-team selection to the Football News All-America team at offensive guard, will be replaced in the starting lineup by redshirt freshman Jeremy Raley for the Cavaliers' game with Virginia Tech at 12:10 p.m. today.
Raley did not dress for the first three games of the season because of a knee injury and has played sparingly since, mostly on the right side. Dixon has started at left offensive guard for UVa for the past three years.
Dixon's suspension is not unprecedented. In 1985, ACC player of the year Barry Word was declared academically ineligible before the Cavaliers' final regular-season game against Maryland.
Dixon, a second-team All-ACC selection in 1992, was rated the No. 1 offensive guard in the nation in The Sporting News college football yearbook.
