6 TO JOIN VMI HALL OF FAME

Five former VMI athletes and one former coach will be inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame tonight at Cameron Hall in Lexington.

The former players are: Floyd Allen (Class of 1982), the leading rusher in VMI history, with 3,569 career yards; Dale R. Davis ('83), who won five Southern Conference and four state high-jump titles and one state 110-meter hurdles title; Phillip Hubbard ('83), who batted .350 during his baseball career and earned all-conference honors twice; John J. Willison Jr. ('77), who holds the VMI career record for tackles, with 456; and Melvin Rucker ('83), who was a two-time all-conference football selection and ranks second on VMI's all-time tackles list with 399. Rucker is being inducted posthumously.

Receiving a special citation will be Walter B. Cormack, head track and field coach at VMI from 1952-74 and head cross country coach from 1949-73.

From 1951-65, Cormack's teams won 13 Big Six and state indoor championships. In the Southern Conference, his teams won seven indoor titles, as well as state and conference championships in indoor and outdoor track. In 1973, Virginia intercollegiate track and field coaches established an award in Cormack's honor that is given annually to the individual who does the most to promote the sport in the state. - Staff report
