OBIT JOHNSON, SAMUEL AUSTIN JR.
JOHNSON, Samuel Austin Jr., 74, of 221 East Wolf St., Narrows, Va., passed
away Sunday morning, November 21, 1993, in the Virginia Veterans Care Center
in Roanoke, Va. Born in Narrows on April 20, 1919, he was a son of the late
Saumel Austin and Sarah Virginia Shumate Johnson. Mr. Johnson was retired from
the U. S. Postal Service, having served as Postmaster in Narrows. He was the
former owner of the Hilltop Merchantile of Narrows and the Narrows Furniture
and Appliance Company. He was a member of the First Christian Church in
Narrows, where he served as an Elder, Deacon and Trustee, and was a member of
the Christian Mens Fellowship. He was a member of the National Association of
Retired Federal Employees, the Narrows Kiwanis Club, the Narrows Chapter of
the A.A.R.P, the American Legion Post #68 of Narrows, and the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post #6000 of Narrows. He was a U. S. Army-Air Force Veteran of
WWII. He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Johnson Coburn and a
brother, Raymond Fetter Johnson. Surviving are his wife, Beulah Harris
Johnson; three sons, Randall S. Johnson of Hampton, Va., Raymond H. Johnson of
Charleston, S.C., and Ronald N. Johnson of Princeton, W. Va.; one daughter,
Katrina J. Clyburn of Roanoke; one brother, James Rufus Johnson of Trinity,
Texas; two sisters, Mary J. Ballard and Helen J. Saphir, both of Narrows; ten
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11
a.m. Tuesday morning at the First Christian Church in Narrows, with Rev. Jack
E. Musick officiating. Entombment will follow in Birchlawn Abbey in
Pearisburg, with graveside rites conducted by the Giles County American Legion
Post and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends at
Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be sent to the First Christian Church in Narrows or the
National Alzheimer's Association.
