BALANCED EMORY & HENRY WINS OPENER 89-85

Scott Butcher scored 23 points, with all six of his field goals coming from 3-point range, as Emory & Henry defeated visiting Virginia Intermont 89-85 in college basketball Monday.

Only one of Butcher's 15 field goal attempts was launched from inside the 3-point arc. He was joined in double figures by Dytanyon Norman with 18 points, Shannon Scott with 12 and Cricker Lauderback with 11.

Scott Keene led Virginia Intermont (2-4) with 20 points, followed by Tyron Randolph with 18 and Andrey Inabinet with 12.

Emory & Henry (1-0) raced to a 48-34 halftime lead, but the Cobras went on an 11-0 run during a six-minute stretch in the second half to pull within 72-68 with 7:50 left. The Cobras could get no closer.

\ Bridgewater 102, Marymount 78: At Bridgewater, Mike Dayton and Jeff Berry each scored 21 points in the Eagles' romp.

Chad Sowers led Bridgewater (2-0) with 12 rebounds as the Eagles outrebounded Marymount (0-1) 56-32.

Chad Edwards and Dan Rush each added 13 points for Bridgewater. Craig Tutt scored 12 points.

Marymount's Marcellus Smith had 33 points. He made 13 of 16 field-goal attempts.

\ Hampton U. 91, Fayetteville St. 82: At Hampton, David Saunders scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds as the Pirates came back from an 11-point deficit to beat Fayetteville State in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Fayetteville State (1-1 overall, 1-1 CIAA) led Hampton (2-0, 1-0 CIAA) 48-37 at the halftime. But the Pirates tied the score at 69 with 7:26 left. Nine seconds later, a 3-pointer by Jafonde Williams gave Hampton the lead for good.

Kevin Gregory scored 20 points and Michael James added 15 for Hampton.

Fayetteville State's Jerome Oliver had 23 points, hitting 9 of 15 from the floor.

Women\ Bridgewater 84, Ferrum 65: At Ferrum, Christie Osborne's 21 points to lead all five Eagles starters in double figures in the romp over the Panthers. Ferrum's Sarah Quesenberry had 14 points for Ferrum (1-2), leaving her only one point shy of becoming the third player in school history to score 1,000 points. Bridgewater is 2-1.
