Music will be more than food for the soul after a group of country singers makes an album of Merle Haggard songs to benefit a national food bank.

"I'm honored that my music is held in such high esteem as to warrant a tribute album," Haggard said Monday. "The fact that the proceeds from this album will go to the Second Harvest Food Bank makes this honor even more important to me."

Haggard, 56, is a major country music figure whose hits include "Mama Tried," "Okie From Muskogee" and "Sing Me Back Home."

Artists expected to perform on the album include Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, Alabama and Willie Nelson.

\ Hollywood's pretty woman is about to become a camel-riding Australian adventuress.

Julia Roberts has the lead in "Tracks," a movie based on the history-making camel ride across Australia's outback by Robyn Davidson.

"Julia is looking forward to playing a woman whose spirit and determination carried her across a continent," Roberts' agent, Elaine Goldsmith, said Monday.

\ Oh, sigh. Another teen-age idol is a bachelor no more. Luke Perry, 27, the actor who plays Dylan McKay on "Beverly Hills 90210," was married last weekend to Minnie Sharp, 24, in a private ceremony in Los Angeles.

So private were the rites, in fact, that Paul Bloch, Perry's publicity agent, said Monday that he did not know any details of the wedding, the honeymoon or Sharp's occupation.

Here is what he was willing and able to divulge: "They were married in a small private ceremony Saturday evening before family and very close friends in Los Angeles. It is the first marriage for both and they have been dating awhile, having met through mutual friends."

\ Ellen Barkin and Gabriel Byrne have gone their separate ways after five years of marriage. Barkin, 38, and Byrne, 43, who co-starred in "Into the West," have two sons, Jack, 4, and Romy, 1.
