NOTTINGHAM IN TECH BOOTH

Former Virginia Tech player Quinton Nottingham has joined the Hokies' radio team for basketball broadcasts this season.

Nottingham, who played guard at Tech before graduating in 1989, will serve as analyst. Bill Roth returns for his sixth season as the Hokies' play-by-play announcer.

Also joining Tech's radio team is Dave Jagler, who will handle all studio reports.

Roanoke College's Kyle Highfill has been selected to the College Division GTE Academic all-district volleyball team. The junior from Cave Spring High School has a 3.78 grade-point average in religion/philosophy. She was second team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference this year. Highfill is one of six players chosen to the District III team by sports information directors in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Grace College, which opened the season with a road victory over reigning NCAA Division III champion Calvin College, will meet Asbury College at 8 p.m. today in the first round of the Cavalier Christian College Basketball Tournament at Lord Botetourt High School in Daleville.

The opening game will pit Tennessee Temple (1-3), from Chattanooga, against Trevecca Nazarene (3-4), from Nashville, Tenn., at 6 p.m. Andy and Steve Murr of Tennessee Temple attended Berean Christian Academy in Roanoke before their family moved to Panama City, Fla.

Grace (1-0) from Winona Lake, Minn., has five players 6-foot-5 or taller, led by 6-6 pro prospect Brian Elliott. Asbury (0-1) from Wilmore, Ky., is in its second year of intercollegiate play and is coached by Dr. Winston Smith, father of Steve Smith, coach of the nation's No. 1-rated high school team at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson.

The championship will be played at 8 p.m. Saturday, preceded by the third-place game at 6 p.m. Tickets are $6 for both nights and $4 for one night.
