Silver dollar to honor Jefferson's 250th

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The U.S. Mint plans to produce thousands of silver Thomas Jefferson coins to commemorate the 250th anniversary of his birth this year.

The Senate voted unanimously Wednesday to authorize the mint to produce the commemorative coin. The vote came three days after the House approved the measure.

The bill provides for the production of 600,000 silver dollar coins that will be 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. Net proceeds from the sale of 500,000 of the coins, expected to cost between $17 and $28, will go to the planned International Center for Jefferson Studies outside Charlottesville.

Proceeds from the sale of the remaining 100,000 coins will go toward restoration and preservation of Monticello, the third president's home near Charlottesville, and his Bedford retreat, Poplar Forest.

Jefferson is already represented on a coin - the nickel. A profile of Jefferson is on the obverse, or "head," of the nickel and Monticello is on the reverse.

State appeals FEMA's storm-relief rejection

RICHMOND - The state has appealed decisions by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to deny federal disaster declarations for Lynchburg and Petersburg.

The state is seeking $3.4 million in federal money to cover uninsured losses from a June 4 windstorm in Lynchburg and tornadoes Aug. 6 in Petersburg.

Randolph Rollins, state secretary of public safety, and two representatives from the state Department of Emergency Services met Wednesday with Richard Krimm, FEMA's associate director for the response and recovery directorate.

Krimm will make a final recommendation within two weeks, Rollins said.

The state has provided $650,000 in grants and $200,000 in low-interest loans to Petersburg, Rollins said. "We feel the state has done as much as it can," he said.

Disney wants county to waive zoning fees

MANASSAS - Walt Disney Co. officials have asked Prince William County to consider waiving or reducing zoning fees that could total $621,000 for a planned theme park, county officials said.

County Executive James H. Mullen said the county fee schedule took effect in the late 1980s, when the county began charging developers by the acre for the staff time it took to review their construction plans. Those projects typically have involved up to 400 acres; the Disney site could involve 3,000 acres.

"When we put together this fee schedule, it never contemplated anything this big," Mullen said. "There is no economy of scale built in. This is not an unusual request. We're looking into it."

"I think this is just the beginning. Because they are Disney, they want special treatment," said Betty Rankin, of the Save the Battlefield Coalition. The Manassas National Battlefield, a Civil War site, is north of the proposed theme park.
