ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The new year will usher in a respectable job market in the Roanoke area, according to businesses questioned by Manpower Inc. about early 1994 staffing projections.

Results of the first quarter employment outlook survey indicate 20 percent of the businesses interviewed will add workers in the first three months of next year.

Manpower said seven percent intend to reduce staff, while 73 percent anticipate no change.

In the coming quarter, improved job opportunities are foreseen in transportation, public utilities, finance, insurance, real estate and services.

Mixed intentions were voiced by non-durable goods manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers.

Ann Ward, spokeswoman for Manpower, said the first three months are typically slow for employment because of cutbacks in retailing after the holidays and other seasonal employment.

A year ago, she said, only 7 percent of employers predicted a boost in hiring and 13 percent expected decreases.

For the last quarter, 17 percent said they would add to their payrolls and three percent planned reductions.
