EARLY CHRISTMAS SALES IN THE ROANOKE VALLEY

Tom Tyree, manager, Leggett department store, Valley View Mall: "Business was good. We could have had a little more if we hadn't had bad weather Saturday. We're anticipating the biggest Christmas we've ever had. Inventory is real good and we're real optimistic."

Barbara Kingery, manager, Heironimus department store, downtown Roanoke: "Our [business] downtown was not as good as it has been in the past. I think the rain kept them away. The weather was a problem downtown and the parking is always a problem; but we did some business."

Larry Davidson, president of Davidsons menswear chain, Roanoke: "We had a very good weekend. We had a significant increase over last year. I'm especially pleased considering the weather. Saturday we had a nice steady flow of people all day long and [Sunday] was great."
