NEGOTIATORS TRY TO EASE CANADA'S NAFTA JITTERS

U.S. and Canadian negotiators Monday tried to resolve concerns raised by the new government of Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien over the North American Free Trade Agreement.

U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor and Canadian Trade Minister Roy MacLaren talked for two hours, but afterwards neither would discuss how much progress had been made in narrowing the differences. MacLaren would not say if he would recommend that Chretien now put NAFTA into effect in Canada.

After winning election last month, Chretien said he wanted changes in NAFTA to meet Canadian concerns on energy, governmental subsidies and dumping of products at below-market prices.
