REPORTED EARNINGS

Smithfield Foods Inc., parent of Valleydale Foods of Salem, on Tuesday reported net income of $923,000, or 4 cents per share, in the second quarter of fiscal 1994, up from $261,000, or 2 cents per share, in the 1993 quarter. Sales were $354.9 million, up from $265.6 million in the fiscal 1993 quarter.

In the first six months, net income was $554,000, or 1 cent per share, down from $2.9 million, or 19 cents per share, in the year-earlier period. Sales rose to $654 million from $493.9 million in the same period a year ago.
