FRIENDS WILL GET GIFT OF GIVING

Nancy Ayling is getting some of her Christmas shopping done early this year - without even leaving the house.

No, she's not shopping by catalog.

Ayling has decided to contribute to the Good Neighbors fund in honor of four of her friends instead of buying them gifts.

She got the idea from her church, Raleigh Court Presbyterian, which is encouraging its members to seek out alternative forms of gift giving, such as the Good Neighbors fund.

"This is a far better use of money than buying an unnecessary trinket that is soon forgotten" Ayling says.

Ayling hopes her friends realize this gift is to honor them.

She sees it as a sign to them that their friendship is invaluable.

She confessed, though, that she's baking them a batch of cookies - just in case.

Checks should be made payable to Good Neighbors Fund and mailed to Roanoke Times & World-News, P.O. Box 1951, Roanoke 24008.

Names - but not the amounts of donations - of contributing businesses, individuals or organizations, as well as memorial and honorific designations, will be listed.

Those requesting that their names not be used will remain anonymous.

If no preference is stated, the donor's name will be listed.

Gifts cannot be earmarked for any particular individual or family. Gifts are tax-deductible.
