ROTARY HONORS TEACHER

Shelley Blumenthal, a counselor and soccer coach at Blacksburg High School, was honored by the Rotary Club of Blacksburg on Thursday for his work with students and parents and the high ethical standards he has brought to his profession.

Blumenthal received the club's annual Non-Rotarian of the Year Award for exemplifying Rotary standards of truth, fairness, goodwill and actions beneficial to all.

He was praised by fellow educators and students, in letters nominating him for the award, for the friendship and goodwill he shows in dealing with students and parents. One student called Blumenthal ``one of the most exceptional people I have met at Blacksburg High School.''

Blumenthal may be best known as the coach who took the BHS boys` soccer team to a 1993 state championship.

He is a native of New Jersey and received his bachelor`s and master's degrees from Lynchburg College where he stayed on to work his way up to director of admissions. He left in 1987 to obtain a doctorate in counseling at Virginia Tech.

He has worked at Blacksburg High School since 1988. His wife, Jan, teaches music at the high school and directs the school's Blacksburg Madrigal Singers.
