WILDER/ROBB FEUD TOUCHES ON GAY LETTER

U.S. Sen. Charles Robb must be desperate about his re-election bid to target a gay leader in California for campaign funds, Gov. Douglas Wilder said Friday.

Wilder, who is challenging Robb for the Democratic nomination, responded to a fund-raising letter written by David Mixner, who helped raise money from homosexuals for President Clinton last year. The letter urges homosexuals to help Robb because the senator spoke in favor of allowing gays in the military.

"I was surprised to see that kind of keyed, targeted approach because it to me suggests that the senator is desperate. Desperate not only for votes, but desperate for money," Wilder said.

Wilder said he would not be "targeting those kinds of groups because it does send messages." He said the effort is unlike his appeal for money from blacks for his bid for governor.
