NORTHSIDE ROLLS PAST CAVE SPRING

Northside, operating with contributions from 11 players, raced to a 12-1 lead and beat visiting Cave Spring 86-65 Friday night in the boys' basketball season-opener for both teams.

Nathan Hungate, a point guard a year ago, switched to the shooting guard and sank three 3-pointers and a game-high 28 points. Sam Barrett added 17, including three 3-pointers, Chad Brammer chipped in 13 points, and Maurice Garrison scored 11 for the Vikings.

Northside forced 31 turnovers and outrebounded the Knights 37-28. Nathan Birckhead, who didn't score, led Northside with eight rebounds.

Matt Matheny led Cave Spring with 16 points. James Irvin sank four 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Kevin Davis had 10 points for the Knights.

Patrick Henry 80\ Alleghany 68

COVINGTON - The Patriots used a 45-21 rebounding advantage to defeat the Mountaineers in a non-district season opener for both teams.

Quinton Twine led Group AAA Patrick Henry with 21 points. Shannon Taylor added 18, Maurice Preston had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Vince McGhee scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Todd Wheatley's 15 points led the Mountaineers, who were 11-of-23 on free throws.

\ William Fleming 67\ E.C. Glass 55

James Stokes scored 18 points, William Fitzgerald had 15 and Derrick Hines added 12 to lead the Colonels past the visiting Hilltoppers in a non-district game.

Lord Botetourt 71\ Roanoke Valley Christian 52

DALEVILLE - Shannon Williams scored 17 points as the host Cavaliers beat the Eagles in a non-district game.

The Cavaliers extended a 12-point halftime lead to 27 after three quarters.

Gabe Sander finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds, Ryan Salvi had 12 points and Jeff Cronise added 12 rebounds for Lord Botetourt. The Cavaliers dominated the rebounding 50-32.

Josh McDermod had 17 points for Roanoke Valley Christian (1-1). Richard Booth and Billy Fluker each had 10.

Liberty 94\ Appomattox 57

BEDFORD - The Minuteman had five 3-pointers in the first quarter - Craig Coleman and J.J. Coles put in two each - as they jetted to a 31-13 lead and cruised to the Seminole District victory over the visiting Raiders.

Greg Reynolds, a sophomore shooting guard, scored 19 points, nine on 3-pointers. Coles, also a sophomore, added 14, Greg Richie chipped in 12, and Shawn Crist added 10. Liberty had nine 3-pointers.

Tyrone Hancock had 14 and Wendell Hodge 13 for the Raiders (1-1 overall, 1-1 in the district).

\ Roanoke Catholic 39\ Stuart Hall 24

Abby Dickson had 19 points and nine rebounds, 11 of the points coming in the first quarter as tournament host Roanoke Catholic (1-1) forged ahead to a 10-point lead in an opening-round victory over the Red Devils in the Private School Tip-Off Tournament.

Teresa Monsour, the Roanoke Catholic point guard, had 12 points, four assists and five steals.

Roanoke Catholic plays North Cross for the tournament championship at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Catholic. Roanoke Valley Christian and Stuart Hall play in the 6 p.m. consolation game.

\ North Cross 39\ Roanoke Valley Christian 22

Emily Cook scored 17 points and Heather Perry chipped in 10 as the Raiders defeated the Eagles in the first round of the Private School Tip-off Tournament at Roanoke Catholic. RVC led 20-12 at halftime, but North Cross (2-0) outscored the Eagles 27-2 in the second half for the win. Tiffany Hogan scored 13 points to lead Roanoke Valley Christian (1-1).

Franklin County 58\ Heritage 48

LYNCHBURG - Patty Campbell scored a game-high 21 points as the Eagles beat the Pioneers in a non-district game. Franklin County led by two points at halftime, then used a 21-8 third period to blow open the game. Lawanda Robey led Heritage with 15 points.

E.C. Glass 38\ William Fleming 30

LYNCHBURG - The Hilltoppers used a big second quarter to pace the non-district victory over the Colonels. Leading 8-7 after one period, E.C. Glass outscored Fleming 15-6 to take a 10-point halftime lead. Sarah Rhodes led the Hilltoppers with nine points. Fleming's Felecia Manns led all scorers with 13 points.

GW-Danville 52\ Patrick Henry 50

A GW-Danville layup with two seconds left thwarted a Patrick Henry comeback in the non-district season opener for both. Patrick Henry trailed by six points with less than one minute remaining but rallied to tie. The Patriots had a shot to win but missed, and the visiting Eagles capitalized. Elisha Jones and Artrice Webb scored 11 points apiece to lead Patrick Henry.
