U.S. INVESTIGATORS CONDUCT PROBE OF NORFOLK'S OVERCROWDED CITY JAIL

A team of U.S. Justice Department investigators have spent the past two weeks checking into allegations of civil rights, safety and health violations at Norfolk's overcrowded city jail.

Federal officials are investigating allegations of overcrowding, medical abuse, unsanitary living conditions and fire safety violations, according to deputies, prisoners and a city official who has been in contact with the team.

The facility was built to hold 579 inmates and now houses almost 1,400. Since 1983, 15 inmates have died there, most for medical reasons. - Associated Press
