NAMES & CHANGES

Rodes retires from firm he founded

ELMER O. RODES JR., vice president of Whitescarver-Rodes & Associates Inc., a Roanoke firm of consulting engineers, will retire Dec. 31 after 43 years, the firm announced.

The Harrisonburg native earned his bachelor of science degree in mining engineering from Virginia Tech in 1947. In 1949, he became a licensed professional engineer. In 1953, he was a founding partner of Sowers, Knowles & Rodes in Roanoke. The firm became Sowers, Rodes & Whitescarver in 1959. In 1984, he was a founding partner of Whitescarver-Rodes & Associates.

Rodes has served on the Roanoke Board of Building Code Appeals and is a member of many technical engineering societies, including the National Society of Professional Engineers and its state affiliate. He worked on the engineering design of major area projects, including the Roanoke and Salem civic centers, Cave Spring and Patrick Henry high schools, and Smith Mountain Lake State Park.

BANKING

Central Fidelity Bank has promoted DANIEL C. NAFF JR. to vice president. Naff joined the bank in September as a senior underwriter for Central Fidelity Mortgage Corp. Previously, he worked for 10 years for Dominion Bank, later First Union National Bank of Virginia, and before that for Peoples Federal Savings and Loan Association, later Charter Federal Savings Bank. The Roanoke native attended Virginia Tech and Roanoke College.

RONALD E. BEW of Abingdon has been named Charter Federal Savings Bank's executive vice president-retail. Bew's responsibilities will include all lending and overall branch activity. He was most recently senior vice president and regional credit executive for the Greater Washington, D.C., region for Crestar Bank.

HEALTH CARE

ROBERT LYNN has been named clinical director at "Changes," Mount Regis Center's new outpatient clinic for alcoholism and chemical dependency at Sugarloaf Crossing on Virginia 419. Lynn formerly held both marketing and clinical positions at Lewis-Gale Hospital and Lewis-Gale Psychiatric Center. He is on the Roanoke Valley Drug Abuse Council and was instrumental in the development of the Employee Assistance Resource Network, which has become a full chapter of the national Employee Assistance Program Association.

HEAVY EQUIPMENT

Carter Machinery Co. Inc. has promoted MARK MINNICK to construction division product support sales manager. He will be located at the company headquarters in Salem, where he will direct sales of parts and service. Since joining the company in 1985, Minnick has held positions in sales, parts and service, marketing and management. He is a graduate of Roanoke College. Carter Machinery is the local distributor of new and used Caterpillar earthmoving equipment, lift trucks and engines. The company has 19 offices throughout Virginia and southern West Virginia.

MANUFACTURING

ROBERT F. SCHICK has been promoted to vice president of Chesapeake Packaging Co., which has a plant in Roanoke. The Richmond-based company is a subsidiary of Chesapeake Corp., a paper and packaging company. Schick will have overall responsibility for container plants located in Roanoke; Richmond; Baltimore, Md.; Binghampton, N.Y.; Louisville, Ky.; St. Anthony, Ind.; and Scranton, Pa.

NONPROFITS

SUSAN JENNINGS has been appointed executive director of the Arts Council of the Blue Ridge. Jennings has been the council's interim executive director since July and formerly was its director of programs and services. She holds a degree in art history from Hollins College. Before joining the Arts Council in 1992, she was a teacher and community volunteer. She has served on the boards of the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley, the Art Museum of Western Virginia, and the Specific Reading and Learning Disabilities Association.

She is an adviser to ArtVenture, a children's art activity project of the Junior League and the Art Museum of Western Virginia. Additionally, she is on the statewide board of the Community Arts Agencies of Virginia. The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge provides service and leadership for its 75 member organizations and assists artists through its artist registry and resource library.

JOHN H. PARROTT JR. has been elected to the board of directors for the Virginia Special Olympics. Parrott is a vice president for Thomas Rutherfoord Inc., insurance agents, brokers and consultants.

ORGANIZATIONS

ROBERT J. FLYNN, president of Royal Construction Co. Inc. at Smith Mountain Lake, has been named regional vice president of the Home Builders Association of Virginia, a trade association made up of 18 local home-builders' associations. It is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders based in Washington, D.C.

REAL ESTATE

DENNIS R. CRONK has been elected regional vice president for the National Association of Realtors. Cronk is a broker and partner with Waldvogel, Poe and Cronk Real Estate Group Inc., a commercial real estate firm. He has been in the real estate business for 19 years. As regional vice president, he will serve as the national liaison for the organization's members in Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

TRANSPORTATION

Piedmont Aviation Services Inc. has named KAREN ROBERTS vice president and general manager of its Roanoke division. She joined the company in 1973 as a general clerk. Piedmont Aviation Services Inc. is a diversified aviation company providing airport services, corporate and private aircraft sales, aircraft charter services, and component overhauls for the airline industry.
