ABOUT THIS SERIES

ABOUT THIS SERIES

One Out of Every Ten is an occasional series spotlighting Roanoke's alarming teen pregnancy rate. Today's stories examine what is - and isn't - being done to combat the issue. Previous articles in the series included:

Oct. 31: "Future Without Hope?" - a story about why Roanoke's teen pregnancy rate is so high. Among the reasons cited: lack of community involvement and job opportunities, not enough on-site day care at schools, nonchalant attitudes about pregnancy among teens and sometimes parents and lack of male responsibility.

Also highlighted in that first package was a profile of Anthony Drakeford - who teaches decision-making skills to at-risk youth and passes out condoms in the housing developments.

Sixteen-year-old August Robinson was profiled as well in a story that chronicled her struggle to raise her 7-month-old daughter and go to school.

Nov. 18: "Pregnant and Proud" - a profile of two teens who said getting pregnant was the best thing they'd ever done. The story examined the shifts in cultural attitudes toward teen pregnancy and how teen pregnancy is seen as a status symbol in some circles.

IN THE COMING WEEKS AND MONTHS:

Dec. 19 : "Unexpected Grandparents," a profile of area families and the burdens parents experience when they become unexpected grandparents.

What other communities are doing to combat teen pregnancy.

The burgeoning abstinence movement.

The cost of teen pregnancy to Roanoke city.

A day in the life of a new teen mother.

The fathers of babies born to teen mothers.
