CHINA PLANS ON USING SPACE SHUTTLE

China will put scientific equipment aboard several U.S. space shuttle flights to conduct physics and environmental experiments, the China Daily newspaper said Saturday.

The first reservation is for 1995, the official newspaper said, quoting Jiang Jingshan, director of the Center for Space Science and Applied Research.

Jiang also said China has joined a European Space Agency project to send up a cluster of satellites that will seek information about the universe. Other participants are the United States, Austria, Britain, France and Germany.

China has a space program but has never sent manned craft into orbit.
