ROCK SLIDE CLOSES 8 MILES OF PARKWAY

A rock slide forced the closing of an eight-mile stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway on Saturday night from U.S. 220 south to U.S. 221 in Roanoke County.

Pansy Clark, a parkway spokeswoman, said the rock slide - in the same location as a similar incident two years ago - occurred about 9:30 p.m. Officials said the slide likely was caused by the steady rain that pelted the area Friday night and all day Saturday.

Late Saturday night, the road was still impassable.

"There are more rocks coming down as soon as what's on the road can be cleared," Clark said.

Clark said work on the road would continue through the night.

A second rock slide, just across the North Carolina state line, closed another section of the parkway on Saturday night, Clark said.

Around the Roanoke and New River valleys, the rain had not caused any other major complications late Saturday night - except for several canceled Christmas parades earlier in the day.

Roanoke County Police reported a few creeks were rising, and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department said water was beginning to rise over parts of North Fork Road in the Bradshaw community.

A flood watch remained in effect Saturday night, but the National Weather Service forecast called for partial clearing today.
