ABDUCTED GIRL FOUND DEAD

Polly Klaas, the 12-year-old girl abducted from a slumber party in her bedroom, is dead, and her body was found Saturday evening, authorities said.

The body was found south of Cloverdale, about 80 miles north of San Francisco and 30 miles north of Petaluma, where she was abducted from her home the night of Oct. 1.

Authorities found the body after speaking with the prime suspect in the case, said Petaluma Police Chief Dennis DeWitt.

When asked if the suspect, Richard Allen Davis, had confessed, DeWitt said: "He just gave us the information to put us where we're at."

Polly's family was in seclusion when the news was announced.

The news came one day after police and the FBI announced they had enough evidence against Davis to refer the case to the Sonoma County district attorney for prosecution. The evidence included Davis' palm print in Polly's bedroom.

Davis has not been charged in connection with the Klaas case. He was in custody on a drunken-driving conviction and a parole violation. Police Saturday night would not give details of the conversation with Davis, which occurred Saturday afternoon.
