ALFANO TIES TECH RECORD FOR COACHING VICTORIES

Christi Osbourne scored 18 points, and Angela Donnell had a career-high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Virginia Tech defeated Ohio University 70-65 on Saturday night at Cassell Coliseum.

The victory was No. 213 for coach Carol Alfano, matching the school record for basketball victories held by former men's coach Charlie Moir.

The Hokies (2-0) bolted to an eight-point halftime lead and were helped by 25 Bobcats turnovers in the game. It was Tech's first victory in three tries against Ohio University (0-2).

The Hokies visit No. 10-ranked Virginia on Wednesday.

In other games:

\ Washington and Lee 60, St. Mary's, Md., 57: In St. Mary's, Md., Karen Stutzman and Sandra Holmes scored 15 points apiece as the Generals (1-3) earned their first victory as a varsity program by beating the Seahawks (3-2).

Washington and Lee went 7-5 last season playing as a club team against a schedule made up mostly of varsity programs.

\ No. 10 Virginia 95, Toledo 64: In Charlottesville, Konecka Drakeford and Wendy Palmer scored 25 points each to lead the Cavaliers (4-0) past the Rockets (3-1) in the championship game of the Coca-Cola/Holiday Inn Classic.

Drakeford, a freshman, was named the tournament's most valuable player.

Amy Lofstedt scored 12 points, and Jeffra Gausepohl and Shaunice Warr each added 10 points for the Cavaliers (4-0).

\ Ferrum 91, Marymount 73: In Ferrum, Glossary Smith scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Panthers (2-2) whipped Marymount (3-1) in the opening round of the Ferrum Invitational.

Ferrum plays Maryville, a 66-53 winner over Methodist, at 3 p.m. today for the championship.

The Panthers led by a point at halftime, then broke open the game against a team ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III at the start of the season. Ferrum won despite missing 23 of 45 free throws.

Sarah Quesenberry, a senior guard from Pulaski County High School, scored 12 points for the Panthers, giving her 1,011 for her career.

\ Roanoke 90, Virginia Wesleyan 62: In Virginia Beach, Crystal Wilson scored 27 points to lead four Maroons in double figures as they rolled past the Marlins in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Kay Caldwell had 17 points, Marcee Hufton 13 and Kristie Workman 10 for Roanoke (5-2 overall, 2-0 ODAC).
