BLACKSBURG INTERIM CHIEF NAMED

Town Manager Ron Secrist has named Capt. William Brown interim police chief for the Blacksburg Police Department, effective Jan. 1.

Brown, a 23-year veteran of the department, replaces Donald L. Carey, who after 13 years as chief has accepted the same position in Independence, Mo.

"Capt. Brown is an outstanding leader and has served the citizens of Blacksburg with distinction for more than two decades," Secrist said. "I am confident that he, with the support of the highly competent men and women of the Blacksburg Police Department, will continue the provision of quality law enforcement services to the citizens of the town."

Interim chief is a familiar position for Brown, who filled the same post in 1980 before Carey was hired. The Blacksburg Police Department has 76 employees and an annual budget of $2.8 million.

Brown, a graduate of the Christiansburg Institute and FBI National Academy, was named a department lieutenant in 1975. He has led the department's patrol and detective units as captain of operations since 1986.

Secrist said he will immediately begin a national search for a permanent chief. The application deadline will be Jan. 21, and the town manager hopes to make an appointment by April.
