Former Gin Blossoms guitarist Doug Hopkins committed suicide Sunday night in Tempe, Ariz., by shooting himself. Hopkins had a history of depression and alcohol abuse, police said.

\ Judith Rodin, provost of Yale University, was nominated Monday as the University of Pennsylvania's next president and the first woman to head an Ivy League institution. Rodin, a 49-year-old behavioral psychologist and a 1966 Penn graduate, was selected after a seven-month search by a committee headed by the president of Penn's Board of Trustees.
