UNDERAGE DRIVER CRASHES CAR, INJURING ELDERLY MAN

A 14-year-old boy "playing around" in the driver's seat of a parked car started the ignition then lost control of the car and crashed into two parked cars, injuring an elderly man, Manassas police said.

The boy was in the driver's seat of his father's car Sunday afternoon while waiting for his father to come out of the Old Towne Inn, said Sgt. Lance Embrey.

After starting the car, the boy took the car in and out of reverse, Embrey said. Then he lost control of the car, barreled backward over a cluster of bushes and into a parked car on Center Street.

Frederick Goeckel, 75, and his daughter, Patricia A. Beuch, 43, of Manassas, were just getting ready to drive off when the boy's car smashed into their car, Embrey said. The teen-ager's car then hit an unoccupied vehicle next to Goeckel's car.

Embrey said Goeckel's legs were crushed in the wreck. A Prince William Hospital spokeswoman said Goeckel was in fair condition Monday.

Beuch was treated and released from Prince William Hospital.

The teen-ager, who lives in the Manassas area, was not injured.

Police are withholding his name until they complete an investigation and decide whether to file charges, Embrey said.
