OBIT LAVINDER, HELEN FRANCES

LAVINDER, Helen Frances, of Salem, died Sunday, December 5, 1993, at her home. She was born October 31, 1903. She was a daughter of the late Philip Thomas and Miranda A. Lavinder. She taught in the Roanoke County and City schools for 44 years, beginning in a one-room school in the Catawba Valley. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Salem, serving as chairman of the Alter Guild for many years. She was also a member of the Fort Lewis Chapter of the D.A.R., serving as Regent, 1962 to 1965, and the Southern Cross Chapter of the U.D.C., and a past president of the Salem Junior Women's Club. She attended the College of William and Mary and graduated from Roanoke College. She is survived by one sister, Odell Martin, Richmond; two brothers and one sister-in-law, S.W. (Pete) and Ruby Lavinder, Salem, M.L. (Jack) Lavinder, Salem; nine nieces and nephews, Sidney Godwin, Inglewood, Fla., Miranda Pobantz, Cincinnati, Ohio, Margaret Ann Reed, Cape Giradeau, Mo., Carolyn Marks, Cleveland, Ohio, Lyn Lavinder, Salem, Anne Biswanger, Pebble Beach, Calif., Ellen Maupin, Carmel, Calif., Martha Broughton, Richmond, Laetitia Barnhill, of the home. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, 2 p.m., at the Fairview Cemetery, Roanoke, with the Rev. Thomas Joyce and the Rev. Jonathan L. Bennett officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Salem. Arrangements by John M.
