TOUGH VOLLEYBALL COMPETITION

Uneasy is the head that wears the crown.

That seems to be the trend in Christiansburg. At least that's what Spots and Ken & Barb's will tell you.

Both teams won the respective regular season titles in their respective fall sports leagues. Spots (27-3) finished three games ahead of Smashers (24-6) in the Co-Ed Open Volleyball League.

Ken & Barb's (10-2) was one game better than Southern Classic Car Wash (9-3) in the Men's Fall Open Softball League.

But the second-place teams extracted their revenge in the tournaments.

In volleyball, Spots reached the finals with relative ease. It won its opening round and semifinal matches two games to none, and only once allowed the opposition to score more than four points. Smashers meanwhile dropped a game in its first round match and won only one game by more than six points.

So what happens in the tournament finals? Smashers smashes Spots 15-3, 15-10.

The story was similar in softball. Southern Classic Car Wash was one loss from being ousted from the double elimination tournament, but won its last three games to claim the tournament title. First it beat Stix 10-2, earning the right to play unbeaten Ken & Barb's for the championship.

Then in back-to-back games, Southern Classic Car Wash wins 4-0 and 9-3.

Of course, these victories could have been predicted. In both sports, the eventual tournament winner knocked off the season-long champion in the regular-season finale.
