GLASGOW'S HEAD START NEEDS HOME

Every time a hard rain comes to Rockbridge County, the water pours into the old elementary school that now serves as Glasgow's community center.

"When the water comes in, it's just like water going over falls," says India Martin of Concerned Citizens of Glasgow. "When it hits the hallways, it's like a creek. You really need boots on."

Because of the ineffectual roof, Glasgow's Head Start program will pull out of the building by the end of this month. Total Action Against Poverty is looking for a new location for the preschool program.

If a place is not found by the first of the year, TAP officials said, a few of the preschoolers can move to the Head Start program in Buena Vista. TAP will offer weekly home visits to the other families.

A new roof was put on the community center 9 1/2 years ago, but it's beyond repair, Martin said. It had a 10-year warranty, but the roofer who did the work is now out of business, Martin said.

Concerned Citizens will try to raise enough money - $23,000 to $30,000 - to put on a new roof by summer. Martin said anyone who wants to help may call her in the evenings at (703) 258-2867.
