POSTAL SERVICE GAINS: LOSS ONLY $371 MILLION

The U.S. Postal Service finished fiscal 1993 with a loss of $371 million, a result hailed by postal officials Tuesday as a big improvement over original expectations.

Postmaster General Marvin Runyon told the postal governing board that increased productivity and mail volume helped cut the loss, which had originally been expected to reach $2.2 billion for the year that ended Sept. 17.
