ALLEGHANY CRASHES GLENVAR'S PARTY

There will be happier birthdays for Art Lawrence, and eventually he'll get his 100th victory as Glenvar's basketball coach.

Alleghany, though, wasn't going to let him blow out the candles and get his wish Tuesday night. The Mountaineers went on a 17-2 run in the first period and the opening minutes of the second quarter to take control en route to a 76-65 non-district victory on the Highlanders' court.

Guard James Hughes paced Alleghany (1-1) with 25 points. Inside, 6-foot-5 Todd Wheatley, still recovering from the football season, had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Combined, those two players hit 16 of 23 shots. \

Rockbridge County 74, Covington 70: At Covington, the Wildcats made 6-of-8 free throws in the final 2 minutes, 26 seconds to quell a comeback by the Cougars. Marty Early led the Wildcats with 29 points, and Keeno Jones led Covington with 24.

\ Bassett 77, Patrick County 62: At Bassett, the Bengals (1-1, 1-1) used pressure defense in the second and third quarters to defeat the Cougars (0-2, 0-2) in the Piedmont District. Art Wade led Bassett with 21 points, while Justin McHone had 19 for Patrick County. \

Grayson County 61, Shawsville 48: At Shawsville, Bryan Boyer scored 16 pf his 21 points in the first half as the Blue Devils (1-0, 1-0) downed the Shawnees (0-3, 0-1) in an Mountain Empire District game.

\ Laurel Park 83, Dan River 66: At Ringgold, the Lancers (2-0, 1-0) pulled away from the Wildcats (0-2) in the fourth quarter to register their 44th straight Piedmont District regular-season victory.

\ Riverheads 66, Parry McCluer 55: At Staunton, 6-foot-9 center James Doyle had nine points and four blocks in the first quarter as the Gladiators whipped the Fighting Blues in a non-district game.

\ Floyd County 72, Rocky Gap 56: At Rocky Gap, Jason Light scored 19 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had five steals as the Buffaloes (1-0, 1-0) rolled past the Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game. \

Magna Vista 73, Fieldale-Collinsville 65: At Ridgeway, the Warriors sank 16 of 20 free throws in the final quarter to hold off the Cavaliers in a Piedmont District game.

Jermaine Simmons was 12-of-16 from the line down the stretch and finished with 16 points. Tony Holmes had 17 points to lead Magna Vista (2-0) and Marcus Toney added 12.

Fieldale-Collinsville (1-1) got 15 points from Ben Seay, 12 from Shane Donovant and 11 from Nat Law. \

Tunstall 72, Martinsville 64: At Dry Fork, Khris Law became a one-man team in the last 2 1/2 minutes of the game to lead the Trojans to a Piedmont District win over the Bulldogs.

Law scored seven points and had two steals and two assists to seal the win for Tunstall (2-0 2-0).

The teams stayed close through most of the game and Martinsville led 51-50 at the end of the third quarter.

Michael Martin paced the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-1) with 16 points. Matthew Durand scored 14 and Carliss Martin and Todd Johnson added 10 apiece.

Hubert Atkins scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Trojans. Chris Walton had 17 points, Law added 16 and Quan Breedlove chipped in 15.

\ Covington Boys' Home 90, Rainelle Christian 81: At Covington, Greg Kier scored 9 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, and Scottie Forbes added 29 points and 20 rebounds as the Indians (4-0) came from behind to win.

\ Auburn 86, Bland 62: At Riner, Terry Millirons scored 30 points, and the Eagles wore out the Rockets in the fourth quarter to open their season with a Mountain Empire District victory.

Millirons also had 17 rebounds to lead Auburn, which pulled away by outscoring Bland 25-8 in the final period. Jon Reed added 17 points for Auburn.

Shannon Havens led the Rockets (0-1, 0-1) with 20 points. \

Highland 72, Grace Christian 61: At Monterey, Tracy Hiner led all scorers with 20 points, and Jamie Botkin added 19 as the Rams won a non-conference season opener for both teams. \
