OBIT HARRIS, NONA KASEY
HARRIS, Nona Kasey, 78, of Richmond, formerly of Roanoke, passed away
Sunday, December 5, 1993. She was a Roanoke pioneer in that she was one of the
city's most committed advocates for minority business women. Mrs. Harris began
her career in private business in 1942 when she opened her first beauty salon
in her home. Mrs. Harris, who lived most of her life in Roanoke, died Sunday
at the Camelot Nursing Home, Richmond. Mrs. Harris, who had been ill for
several years was in business for nearly 40 years in Roanoke. She opened her
first beauty salon in the community in 1955. In addition to her profession,
she also taught beautician classes in the area for many years. Born in
Goodview to the late James Winston and Lena J. Kasey, she graduated from
Addison High School in 1934. She also graduated from the Adele Beauty School
in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1938. She was recognized for her tireless volunteer
work in the community and her activities in numerous civic ventures. Included
were the many years she spent as a volunteer with the local Boy Scouts of
America as a den mother. She was a member of the Modern Beauticians Club, the
Professional Beauticians Association, the Jack and Jills of America, the
Continental Society, and the Shepherds of the Hill Garden Club. Mrs. Harris
was a devout member of the Loudon Avenue Christian Church for many years. She
was also a leader in the Deborah Circle, the church's women's organization.
She married Irvin Harris, deceased, in September 1939. Mrs. Harris is survived
by two daughters, Bernadine Harris Pullen of Richmond, Rebecca Harris Hall of
Columbus, Ohio; four sons, Michael Harris of Baltimore, Md., Errol T. Harris
of Roanoke, Wendell Harris of Atlanta, Ga., Robert W. Harris of Roanoke; a
sister, Mrs. Maggie Kasey Harris of Trenton, N.J.; a brother, Sherman Kasey of
Vinton; a dear cousin, Mrs. Lillian Newman of Roanoke; eight grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren; in-laws; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 11 a.m. at the Loudon Avenue Christian
Church with Rev. William L. Lee officiating. Interment will be at the Old
Dominion Gardens on Cloverdale Road. The viewing will be Friday from 7 to 8
p.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. The family will gather at the home of
Janice and James Burkes, 1836 Grayson Ave., N.W.
