TECH, UVA PICK FAIRFAX FOR CENTER

Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia selected a 7-acre site in Fairfax County as the permanent home for their $18 million regional graduate center.

The two state-funded schools announced they intend to open the new classroom and library complex in 1996.

Most of the property is owned by the city of Falls Church, which will lease 5 acres to the two schools. The schools will buy the other 2 acres from a developer.

The graduate center, now housed in temporary quarters in Fairfax, serves about 5,000 students a year.

The General Assembly must appropriate $11 million over the next two years to meet the schools' construction schedule.
