WHO RAN THE RED LIGHT?

Two women were injured Thursday afternoon when a car and a Roanoke school bus collided in the intersection of Elm Avenue and Fifth Street Southwest.

The bus was carrying one student, who was not injured.

Police were trying to determine which of the two vehicles caused the 2:20 p.m. accident by running a red light.

Eileen Harrison, a school bus driver with six years of experience, said she had the right of way.

Harrison, 46, said she was eastbound on Elm Avenue when she saw a northbound silver sedan approaching on Fifth.

"I thought she would stop, but she just kept going," Harrison said.

Claire Newman, a retired teacher who was driving the car, told police that the bus ran the red light, according to Officer R.L. Harman.

Newman, 56, was wearing a seat belt and walked away from the wreck.

One passenger, identified as Helen Kasey, 71, was listed in stable condition Thursday night at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

A second passenger, Margaret Haley, 82, was pinned on the floorboard in the front seat. She also was listed in stable condition at Roanoke Memorial.
